Common Program Questions

How do I share my Calendar with my friend, co-worker or boss?

If you want to share your calendar, you must do the following: (Before you proceed, your colleage must also be registered and using UVC)

1. Make sure you are in the messenger module. Select the contact you want to share your information with in the messenger tree, right click on the user and select 'Other Options->Edit View Access Rights' from the menu item. (If you don't have any contacts in your list, you must first add your friend to your buddy list)

2. The window that opens allows you to set different access levels to provide to that contact. In the Calendar Access section select Full. This will allow this user to have full access to your calendar. These steps are necessary in order to have the proper security settings assigned so that only the people you want to have access to your information

3. Once these steps are done, the contact that you gave access to can now go into the Calendar module and will have your name showing under the 'My Calendar' header at the top. All they have to do is click on that header and select you from the drop down list. This will automatically refresh the screen and allow them access to your appointments.

How do I add my MSN account to UVC?

To enable your MSN accounts, go to Messenger->Setup Instant Messenger and Email Accounts and then click on the button 'Add Account'. You can then enter your MSN account information which will then be enabled for use within the UVC Application.

When entering a phone number in the address book, I need to be able to enter a number that has a different format than the standard North American 3-3-4. I also need to be able to prefix some numbers with different key combinations(to disable caller ID, call-waiting etc...). Is there any way to do this?

You can change the default phone number format by going to the File menu then Options & Preferences. You can then select the Phone Templates drop down menu and chose one of two pre-formatted options, or select the None option to have no pre-formatting whatsoever. Or, if you need to change a phone number format for a single entry simply click on the icon to the right of the phone number fields and select the formatting option you require.

Using UVC am I able to have voice chats (not text) with other users?

UVC allows for Audio and Video sessions and chats in addition to text. You can initiate a broadcast from the media menu item. Once a person is broadcasting video or audio, his/her online friends can receive the audio/video and can broadcast their own back to you. UVC also allows for multiple audio/video conversations to take place simultaneously. If you are using Mac OS X or your computer is behind a firewall or router please read the help inside the broadcast modules since some configurations may cause this not to work.

Common Technical Questions/Difficulties

I'm behind a proxy and UVC won't establish a connection?

If you're using a proxy make sure that you're using the WebStart version of UVC. The standalone version of UVC doesn't support proxy configurations, however the WebStarted version of UVC was designed especially to detect proxy configuration and should work for most cases.

I'm using the WebStart enabled version of UVC and I seem to be getting a lot of "Time out receiving response from server" messages. My proxy is configured correctly. What other ports does UVC need?

You seem to be one the those handful of people having an issue with a firewall/proxy configuration. We have come across this with some firewalls which automatically drop a connection on port 443 after it being active for longer than 5 minutes (can be configured however). UVC does have additional checks that once it detects a connection drop it will automatically reestablish connection however this still causes an error if the client was in the middle of a transmission when the dropped connection occurs.

We will be looking at providing an http tunneling solution on port 80 which purely uses http requests however due to the nature of the application this may have performance implications and we are still investigating this option. We apologize for the inconvenience this problem has caused and we hope you can still use the application from other locations without this firewall limitation.
